Job Market Paper: Dynamics of Employment Spillovers In Local Economies

Abstract: Employment spillovers play a crucial role in shaping local labor markets, yet their dynamics remain poorly understood. I use a modified shift-share instrumental variable approach to analyze how labor demand shocks to manufacturing industries influence employment in the service and manufacturing sectors across varying time frames. The results indicate that manufacturing shocks produce negative short-term spillovers to the service sector, which gradually recover toward zero or become slightly positive. Within the manufacturing sector, by contrast, spillovers are initially positive but diminish in magnitude in the long-term.
