About Economics Department

The Department of Economics offers undergraduate (BA), master’s (MA in Economics and MA in Applied Economics) and doctoral (Ph.D.) programs in economics. We are home to roughly 200 undergraduate students and 70 graduate students, and our courses are open to all UIC students regardless of the college in which they are enrolled. Consistent with the mission of UIC, our graduate programs focus on applied economics with considerable strengths in health economics, the economics of education, urban/public economics, and international economics. Our accomplished faculty are distinguished in their areas of expertise, have outstanding records of scholarly publications, and often consult with government agencies, NGOs and private corporations. The department also promotes excellence in teaching economics in high schools, colleges and universities throughout the Chicago Metropolitan Area through the activities of the Center for Economic Education and the Certificate in Teaching Economics. A dedicated staff supports all aspects of department work.
