UIC Economics Department: Excellent teaching and cutting-edge research

  • The UIC Economics Department works diligently to support excellence in the classroom and in research. We offer extensive mentoring of faculty and graduate students and endeavor to create and maintain high expectations for both teaching and research
  • Economics majors enjoy some of the best job prospects and highest average salaries of any liberal arts department, and we believe that our commitment to excellent teaching and student support leaves our graduates ready to excel in jobs or graduate school. Undergraduates take jobs in many different occupations including consulting, finance, public policy, research and retail, and many attend graduate school in law, business, medicine, public policy, economics or other fields
  • Over 80 percent of students in our undergraduate classes in academic year 2022-2023 were in classes in which the average student rating of the effectiveness of the instructor was 4 out of 5 or HIGHER
  • Many undergraduates take advantage of the opportunities to conduct research for one of our faculty
  • Our faculty are passionate about their research and sharing their knowledge with students. For the first time in many years, UIC faculty have published papers in the very top Economics Journals. In addition, UIC faculty are publishing an increasing number of papers in other leading journals in economics and policy, and two faculty collaborated to receive a prestigious National Science Foundation grant
  • LAS support has been crucial to our accomplishments in teaching and research, and through the strategic deployment of our resources we support college and university efforts to offer an outstanding education that families can afford. We keep the size of our graduate classes small to ensure strong advising and employment opportunities, we offer engaging and supportive classes across the curriculum, and our small, excellent staff works hard to support the department and keep costs down
  • Over the past five years our cost per credit hour consistently places us far below the LAS average as one of the lowest cost departments in the college. We recognize that a strong UIC is crucial for our department to flourish
