Job Market Paper: Effect of education on health knowledge: evidence from Vietnam
Abstract: This paper examines the causal effect of education on health knowledge in the settings of HIV/AIDS in Vietnam by exploiting a compulsory primary education reform in 1991. I find strong evidence that education increases health knowledge, and the impacts are heterogeneous across ethnic groups and locations. Education unfortunately does not improve attitudes towards people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Together, these findings suggest that in the case of Vietnam, stigma and discrimination against PLWHA stem from cultural values and not from lack of knowledge.
